A significant research partnership between Imperial College London and IIT Bombay is advancing quantum computing applications in biotechnology to support climate-resilient agriculture. The collaboration focuses on using quantum technologies to model complex plant-microbe interactions in soil, aiming to enhance crop resilience and productivity in arid and climate-vulnerable regions. The project studies the role of strigolactone, a plant chemical messenger, and tests biochar’s effect on boosting beneficial microbial partnerships. This initiative is a major pillar of the India-UK Technology Security Initiative (TSI), reinforcing scientific cooperation and innovation ahead of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Mumbai during the Global Fintech Fest 2025. Funded by Imperial’s India Connect Fund and supported by its Bengaluru science hub, this project exemplifies cutting-edge interdisciplinary research combining microbial ecology, genomics, bioinformatics, and quantum simulation. The collaboration, led by Dr. Po-Heng (Henry) Lee of Imperial and Dr. Indrajit Chakraborty of IIT Bombay, highlights the growing bilateral momentum to use advanced technology for addressing global food security and climate challenges, marking a new chapter in India-UK science and technology partnerships.
