India and Germany are close to finalising a major defence agreement for six advanced submarines, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral military cooperation and indigenous defence production. According to Germany’s ambassador to India, negotiations with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems are in advanced stages, with the deal expected to be signed within weeks. The agreement is part of India’s Project 75I programme, which focuses on building next-generation diesel-electric submarines equipped with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology. This system allows submarines to remain submerged for longer durations, significantly enhancing stealth and operational capability. A key highlight of the deal is its strong “Make in India” component. The submarines will be constructed largely in India through a collaboration between Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited and TKMS, with substantial local manufacturing and technology transfer. The submarines are expected to be based on an advanced version of Germany’s Type-214 design, known for its stealth capabilities and endurance. This long-pending deal is also part of India’s broader strategy to modernise its naval fleet, which has faced delays in past procurement cycles. Once finalised, it will significantly strengthen India’s underwater defence capabilities while reducing reliance on imports. Beyond submarines, the discussions reflect growing trust between India and Europe in the defence sector. Germany has indicated openness to deeper collaboration, including potential future partnerships in advanced defence technologies and joint development programmes. The agreement signals a shift toward co-development and local manufacturing in high-tech defence systems, creating opportunities for industrial collaboration, supply chain integration, and technology exchange between Indian and European players.
