India and the EU launched a €15.2 million joint research and innovation initiative on 5 May 2026 to advance electric vehicle battery recycling, announced under the India–EU Trade and Technology Council's Working Group on Green and Clean Energy Technologies. The programme is jointly funded by the European Commission through its Horizon Europe programme and India's Ministry of Heavy Industries, with a deadline for research proposals set for 15 September 2026. A key component of the initiative is the establishment of a joint India–EU pilot line based in India, focused on real-world validation and industrial deployment of new recycling technologies, with a particular emphasis on recovering critical minerals including lithium, graphite, and cobalt. This marks the third coordinated initiative to be launched under the TTC framework. Officials from both sides framed the programme as part of a broader push to reduce dependence on China for critical minerals, strengthen supply chain resilience, and build a functioning circular economy around clean energy materials. Researchers, industries, and startups from both regions are expected to collaborate in scaling advanced battery recycling technologies from laboratory development through to full industrial deployment.
