As India drives its Atmanirbhar Bharat vision through deep-tech research and a strengthened intellectual property (IP) landscape, the European Patent Office (EPO) is spotlighting the strategic importance of patents in fostering global innovation and knowledge sharing. Roberta Romano-Goetsch, Chief Sustainability Officer at the EPO, spoke exclusively to ANI at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Global Summit on Technology, R&D and Intellectual Property, underscoring how patents have evolved into powerful assets that extend far beyond mere protection and actively support innovation-led growth across borders. Romano-Goetsch highlighted that the summit’s discussions focused on innovation, research and development, and the pivotal role of intellectual property in building a robust innovation ecosystem in the deep-tech era. She emphasised that the EPO’s contribution goes beyond granting patent protection by sharing patent knowledge through platforms, studies and insights on technologies that address global challenges such as health, digital agriculture, renewable energy and water technologies. Patent publication and knowledge dissemination, she explained, are central to how the EPO supports innovators and policymakers worldwide, with its extensive patent databases enabling access to technical information around the clock. Romano-Goetsch noted that India’s growing presence in international patent applications reflects the nation’s expanding role in innovation and global IP trends. Looking ahead, she pointed to future collaboration opportunities - including under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) - that can deepen cooperation between India and the EPO in supporting research, commercialisation and sustainable development.
