Anthropic, the AI startup behind the Claude chatbot, has announced plans to expand its presence in India, emphasizing the country’s critical role in the future of artificial intelligence. The company intends to open its first Indian office in Bengaluru by early 2026, marking its second Asia-Pacific location after Tokyo. CEO Dario Amodei recently met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss expansion strategies and collaboration opportunities. Since June, usage of Anthropic’s Claude Code AI has surged fivefold in India, reflecting rapid adoption across vital sectors such as education, healthcare, and agriculture. Anthropic views India not only as a huge market—the second-largest globally for the company—but also as a strategic innovation hub fueled by a large base of skilled engineers and government support.
