Norwegian renewables developer Aneo has agreed to acquire a significant portion of RWE Renewables Sweden’s wind power portfolio, boosting its presence in the Nordic renewable energy market and accelerating its strategy to become a leading regional player in clean power generation. The transaction adds both operational wind farms and future development capacity to Aneo’s portfolio. The deal covers 124 MW of onshore wind capacity across 11 wind farms and 48 MW of nearshore capacity, including the Kårehamn facility off Sweden’s Öland coast - a nearshore installation with more than a decade of operational track record. These assets collectively generate around 500 GWh of electricity annually, strengthening Aneo’s production base in Sweden’s southern SE4 price zone. In addition to physical power plants, the acquisition includes RWE’s Swedish development pipeline and operational teams, bringing experienced personnel into Aneo’s operations and expanding its capabilities in wind project development, permitting, construction and operations & maintenance. Aneo’s CEO Gunnar Hovland described the portfolio as strategically valuable, saying it provides greater geographic and technological scale while complementing the company’s earlier takeover of Swedish wind developer Arise AB. Aneo’s acquisition strategy comes at a time when some international utilities have recalibrated their Nordic renewables exposure amid varied merchant pricing and grid constraints. By contrast, Aneo has pursued a counter-cyclical expansion path, closing multiple transactions since late 2024 and positioning itself as a long-term developer and operator of renewables in the region. For RWE, the sale is part of a broader portfolio rotation strategy, enabling the company to refocus on markets and technologies where it sees stronger opportunities for large-scale renewable build-out and integrated storage solutions. RWE Renewables’ leadership underscored that the Swedish teams and projects will continue under Aneo’s ownership, contributing to local jobs and community engagement while RWE pursues growth in other core regions. The acquisition still requires regulatory approval in Sweden, a standard process expected to conclude in the coming months. If completed as planned, Aneo will significantly bolster its wind capacity in the Nordic region a key area for Europe’s renewable energy expansion as countries work toward 2030 climate targets and grid reliability improvements amid rising electrification and clean energy demand.
